Weighted grade formula
Weighted grade = Σ(grade × weight) / Σ(weight)
Each component contributes to your grade in proportion to its weight. Multiply every grade by its weight, add those products, and divide by the total weight. Dividing by the total weight (rather than assuming 100%) means the result is correct even if your weights don't sum to exactly 100%.
Worked example
A homework average of 88% weighted 40% and an exam of 92% weighted 60%: (88 × 40 + 92 × 60) / 100 = 90.4%.
Frequently asked questions
Do my weights have to add up to 100%?
Not for the math to work — the calculator divides by the total weight you enter. But if the weights represent your whole course grade, they should sum to 100% for the result to reflect your true standing.
Can I mix points and percentages?
Enter grades as percentages for a consistent result. If your categories are in points, convert each to a percentage of its maximum first.
What's the difference between this and a GPA calculator?
A weighted grade calculator averages percentage scores within one course by weight. A GPA calculator converts letter grades across several courses to grade points weighted by credit hours.
