GPA is a credit-weighted average of your grades. Each letter grade converts to points on the 4.0 scale, multiplied by the course's credit hours so a 4-credit class influences your GPA more than a 1-credit class. Divide the total grade points by total credits.
Worked example
An A in a 3-credit class (12.0 points), a B+ in a 4-credit class (13.2 points), and a B in a 3-credit class (9.0 points): total 34.2 points over 10 credits = 3.42 GPA.
Frequently asked questions
Does an A+ count as more than 4.0?
At most schools A+ and A are both 4.0, which is what this calculator uses. Some institutions award 4.3 for an A+ — check your school's official scale.
How do weighted GPAs (5.0 scale) work?
Some high schools add extra points for honors or AP classes (e.g., an A in AP = 5.0). This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale that colleges typically recalculate anyway.
How can I raise my GPA fastest?
High-credit courses move your GPA most. Also, the more credits you have accumulated, the harder your overall GPA is to move — so improvements matter most early.
