How it works
Date arithmetic
result = start date + N days weeks: N × 7 days months: advance the month number, clamping the day to the month's length business days: step forward one day at a time, skipping Saturdays and Sundays
Adding days is straightforward arithmetic on a timestamp. Months and years are not, because they have different lengths — adding one month to 31 January has no exact answer, so the convention is to clamp to the last day of the target month. Business-day arithmetic cannot be done with multiplication at all, since the number of weekends crossed depends on which day you start.
Worked example
90 days from 22 July 2026 is 20 October 2026, a Tuesday. Of those 90 days, 64 are weekdays and 26 fall on a weekend — which is why a 90-day deadline is only about 64 working days.

Calendar days versus business days
Contracts, court filings, and payment terms are usually written in one or the other, and the difference is substantial. A 90-day window contains about 64 working days, so a deadline expressed in business days is roughly 40% longer in wall-clock time than the same number of calendar days.
Read the wording carefully. "Within 30 days" almost always means calendar days. "Within 30 business days" is closer to six weeks. And public holidays are excluded in most legal definitions of a business day but are not modelled here, since they differ by country and often by state.
Why adding a month is ambiguous
There is no universally correct answer to "one month after 31 January". February has no 31st. The near-universal convention, used here and by most software and financial systems, is to clamp to the last valid day of the target month — so you get 28 February, or 29 in a leap year.
The consequence is that month arithmetic is not reversible. 31 January plus one month is 28 February, but 28 February minus one month is 28 January. If exact reversibility matters, count in days instead.
The intervals that show up most
Certain windows recur constantly: 30, 60, and 90 days for invoices and credit terms; 14 days for cooling-off and return periods; 180 days for many visa and insurance windows; and 365 days for anniversaries and annual renewals.
The table above computes all of them from your starting date at once, which is usually faster than running the calculation several times. Note that 90 days and three months are not the same — 90 days from 1 January is 1 April in a non-leap year, but 31 March in a leap year.

Does the business-day mode skip holidays?

Is the starting date included in the count?
No. Counting starts from the day after the starting date, which is the standard convention for deadlines. "Three days from Monday" is Thursday, not Wednesday.
Why does adding one month to 31 January give 28 February?
Because February has no 31st day. The standard convention is to clamp to the last day of the target month rather than rolling over into March. Nearly all date libraries and financial systems behave this way.
