Ovulation timing is estimated by working backward from the next expected period rather than forward from the last one, because the luteal phase — the time from ovulation to menstruation — is far more consistent than the first half of the cycle. That luteal phase is typically 12 to 14 days, so ovulation is estimated to occur about two weeks before the next period is due. Adding the cycle length to the first day of the last period gives the next period date, and subtracting the luteal phase from that gives the ovulation day. The fertile window spans roughly the five days before ovulation, because sperm can survive that long in the reproductive tract, through to about a day after, the egg's viable lifespan. The days immediately before and on ovulation are the most fertile.
Worked example
For a 28-day cycle starting 1 July with a 14-day luteal phase, ovulation is estimated around 15 July — cycle day 15, two weeks before the next period due on 29 July. The fertile window runs roughly 10–16 July, with the two most fertile days being the day before and the day of ovulation.

Why timing works backward from the next period
A common misconception is that ovulation always happens on day 14 of the cycle. That is only true for a textbook 28-day cycle, and even then only approximately. The more reliable way to estimate ovulation is to count backward from the next period, not forward from the last. This is because the menstrual cycle has two phases with very different variability. The follicular phase, from the start of the period to ovulation, can vary widely in length from cycle to cycle and person to person. The luteal phase that follows ovulation, however, is remarkably stable, almost always 12 to 14 days.
