Across a night, sleep moves repeatedly through light sleep, deep sleep, and REM in cycles of about 90 minutes. Waking naturally at the end of a cycle, from light sleep, leaves you alert; an alarm that fires in the middle of deep sleep produces grogginess even after plenty of hours. The trick is to time sleep in whole cycles, working backward from a fixed wake time or forward from when you actually fall asleep — allowing about 15 minutes to drop off.
Worked example
To wake at 7:00 AM, allowing 15 minutes to fall asleep, six full 90-minute cycles (9 hours) means going to bed at 9:45 PM. Five cycles (7.5 hours) would mean 11:15 PM — a later night that still ends on a cycle boundary.

Why waking mid-cycle feels awful
Sleep is not uniform. Over each roughly-90-minute cycle you descend through light sleep into deep, slow-wave sleep, then rise into REM, where most dreaming happens. Deep sleep is the hardest to wake from, and being pulled out of it — as a badly timed alarm does — causes sleep inertia: the heavy, disoriented grogginess that can linger for half an hour.
Waking at the end of a cycle, in light sleep, avoids this almost entirely. It is why you can sometimes wake refreshed after only six hours but groggy after eight — the six-hour wake happened to land on a cycle boundary, and the eight-hour one interrupted deep sleep. Cycles, not just hours
The familiar advice to get eight hours is a reasonable average, but it ignores where those hours end. Seven and a half hours (five cycles) or nine hours (six cycles) will often leave you feeling better than a flat eight, because they finish at a cycle boundary rather than in the middle of one. Counting cycles is a refinement on counting hours.
