Estimating drywall begins with the surface area to be covered. The walls form a band around the room whose area is the perimeter — twice the length plus twice the width — multiplied by the ceiling height. If the ceiling is also being boarded, its area (length times width) is added. Large openings for doors and windows are subtracted, since no board goes there. A waste allowance is then added to cover the offcuts left when sheets are trimmed to fit, and the total is divided by the area of one sheet, rounding up because you cannot buy a partial sheet. From the sheet count, the fasteners and finishing materials follow by simple ratios: roughly thirty-odd screws per sheet, and quantities of joint tape and compound proportional to the area being taped.
Worked example
A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings has 2 × (12 + 12) × 8 = 384 ft² of wall plus a 144 ft² ceiling, for 528 ft² total. Adding 10% waste gives about 581 ft²; at 32 ft² per 4×8 sheet that is 19 sheets, needing roughly 600 screws to hang.

Counting sheets from area
Drywall is sold in sheets, so the estimate is really a question of how many sheets cover the required area. The area itself is straightforward — the walls wrap around the room as a band whose area is perimeter times height, and the ceiling, if included, adds its footprint. The one judgement is how much to subtract for openings. Small windows and a single doorway are often left in the calculation as waste buffer, but large openings like patio doors or a wide arch are worth subtracting, since together they can remove the equivalent of a sheet or two.
Sheet size then sets the divisor. The standard 4×8 sheet covers 32 square feet and is the easiest to handle alone; 4×12 sheets cover 48 square feet and cut the number of joints substantially, which matters because joints are the slow, skilled part of the job. Choosing a larger sheet reduces both the sheet count and the taping work, at the cost of weight and manoeuvrability. The calculator lets you compare, but the practical choice often comes down to whether you can physically wrangle a twelve-foot sheet into the space.
The finishing materials that get forgotten
Hanging the board is only half the job; taping and finishing the joints is the other half, and it is where the supplementary materials come in. Every seam between sheets, and every inside and outside corner, must be covered with joint tape and then embedded and hidden under successive coats of joint compound, or 'mud'. The quantities scale with the area, but beginners consistently underestimate the compound, because a good finish uses several coats, each feathered wider than the last, and a full skim coat for a smooth wall uses more still.
Screws are the other consumable, holding the board to the studs or joists at regular intervals — roughly every 12 inches in the field and closer at the edges, which works out to about thirty-two per standard sheet. It is worth buying screws, tape, and especially compound with a comfortable margin. Running out of mud mid-coat means a trip to the store and a visible seam where the work paused. These materials are cheap relative to the board and the labour, so generosity here is false economy to avoid.
Waste, thickness, and practical choices
A 10% waste allowance is typical, covering the offcuts that inevitably pile up as sheets are trimmed around windows, outlets, and corners. Rooms with complex shapes, many openings, or lots of short walls generate more waste and justify a higher allowance; a simple rectangular room with tall unbroken walls wastes less. Since drywall is inexpensive, rounding up is usually the right call — an extra sheet costs little and saves a return trip, and offcuts are useful for patches.
Thickness is a separate decision the sheet count doesn't capture. Half-inch board is standard for walls, while ceilings often use a slightly thicker or sag-resistant board to avoid drooping between joists over time. Moisture-resistant board is used in bathrooms and fire-rated board where codes require it, such as between a garage and living space. These specialty boards cost more but are not optional where they are called for.
