The speed–distance–time triangle
speed = distance ÷ time distance = speed × time time = distance ÷ speed keep the units consistent (or convert first)
Speed, distance, and time form a triangle: cover any one and the other two give it. Distance is speed times time; the other two forms are that relationship rearranged. The only pitfall is units — a speed in miles per hour with a distance in kilometres will not divide cleanly, so this calculator converts everything to metres and seconds internally and reports the answer in every common unit.

One relationship, three forms
Speed, distance, and time are bound by a single equation — distance equals speed multiplied by time — and everything else is that equation rearranged. Need the time? Divide distance by speed. Need the speed? Divide distance by time. The familiar triangle, with distance on top and speed and time below, is just a memory aid for which operation to use: cover the quantity you want and the position of the other two tells you whether to multiply or divide.
Because it is one relationship, the three calculators are really the same calculation viewed from different angles. This is why the mode switch above simply changes which value is the unknown; the physics underneath never changes.
Average speed is not top speed
The most common planning mistake is to divide a journey's distance by the top speed and treat the result as the travel time. Real trips include acceleration, deceleration, traffic, junctions, and stops, so the average speed over the whole journey is always lower — often dramatically. A motorway drive with a 70 mph limit might average 55 mph door to door once slip roads and a coffee stop are counted.
This is why 'it's only 200 miles, that's under three hours' so often turns into four. For a realistic estimate, use a conservative average speed that reflects the whole trip, not the number on the speedometer at cruise. If you know how long a similar trip took before, working the average speed backward from it is more reliable than any assumed cruising figure.
Watch the units
Units cause more errors here than the arithmetic ever does. Mixing miles with kilometres, or hours with minutes, produces answers that are wrong by a factor rather than a rounding error. The classic slip is dividing a distance in miles by a speed given as metres per second, or reading a time of 2.5 hours as 2 hours 50 minutes rather than 2 hours 30.
The safe habit is to convert everything to one consistent system before calculating — this tool uses metres and seconds internally — and to be careful that a decimal time like 1.75 hours means 1 hour 45 minutes, not 1 hour 75 minutes. The outputs above deliberately show the time in hours-minutes-seconds precisely to avoid that last trap.

How do I calculate travel time?
Divide the distance by your average speed: time = distance ÷ speed. 150 miles at 60 mph takes 150 ÷ 60 = 2.5 hours. Use a realistic average speed for the whole journey, not the top speed, or the estimate will run short.
How do I find average speed?
Divide the total distance by the total time, including any stops. If a 150-mile trip took 3 hours door to door, the average speed was 50 mph — even if you cruised at 70 for much of it, because stops and slow sections pull the average down.
Why does my trip take longer than distance ÷ speed limit?
Because that formula uses top speed, while real journeys average much less. Acceleration, traffic, junctions, and rest stops all reduce the whole-trip average below the cruising speed, often by 15–25% on a long drive. Plan with a realistic average, not the limit.
How do I convert a decimal time to hours and minutes?
Multiply the decimal part by 60. 2.5 hours is 2 hours and 0.5 × 60 = 30 minutes. 1.75 hours is 1 hour 45 minutes, not 1 hour 75. This calculator shows the time in hours-minutes-seconds to remove the ambiguity.
