Estimating flooring is a matter of area plus a margin. Multiply the room's length by its width to get the floor area, adding any closets or alcoves separately since they fall outside the main rectangle. Then inflate that area by a waste allowance to cover the pieces cut off at walls and doorways, the occasional miscut, and a reserve for future repairs. Dividing by the coverage printed on each box and rounding up gives the number of boxes, because you cannot buy a fraction of a box. Multiplying by the price per box gives the material cost. The waste allowance is the judgement call: a plain rectangular room wastes little, while diagonal or herringbone layouts and rooms with many jogs and openings waste considerably more.

Why you always buy more than the floor area
It is tempting to order flooring to match the exact floor area, but that guarantees running short. Every plank cut to fit against a wall, around a doorway, or into an alcove leaves an off-cut, and often the leftover piece is too small to use elsewhere. Add the occasional board damaged in handling or cut wrong, and real installations consume noticeably more material than the bare area suggests. The waste allowance exists to cover this predictable overage.
There is a second, longer-term reason to buy extra: repairs. Flooring is manufactured in dye lots and production runs that vary subtly in colour and texture, and a plank bought a year later to replace a damaged one may not match. Keeping a box or two in reserve from the original batch means a future repair blends in invisibly. The few dollars of extra material are cheap insurance against a mismatched patch in the middle of the room.
How much waste to allow
The right waste percentage depends mostly on the installation pattern and the room's shape. A straightforward straight-lay in a simple rectangular room wastes the least, and 10% is a standard allowance. Laying planks on a diagonal increases waste, because the angled cuts at every wall produce more unusable offcuts, pushing the figure to around 15%. Intricate patterns like herringbone or chevron waste the most, often 15–20% or higher, as does a room chopped up by many closets, bays, and doorways.
The size of the plank and room also plays a part. Long planks in a small room can waste more, since a single cut can sacrifice a large piece, while smaller formats fit more efficiently. When unsure, err on the higher side — the cost of an extra box is trivial next to the disruption and colour-matching risk of a mid-project reorder. Beyond the boards: what else a floor needs
The boxes of flooring are the headline cost, but a complete job needs more. Most floating floors — laminate and luxury vinyl in particular — require an underlayment beneath them for cushioning, sound damping, and moisture protection, sold by the same square footage as the floor. Transition strips bridge doorways and changes of flooring, and quarter-round or baseboard trim covers the expansion gap left around the room's edge.
There are also consumables and, often, tools: spacers, a tapping block and pull bar for click-lock systems, adhesive for glue-down floors, and blades for the many cuts. Subfloor preparation can add cost too, if the existing floor needs levelling or a moisture barrier. When budgeting, treat the box count from this calculator as the main material line and add underlayment, trim, and sundries on top — they can add a meaningful fraction to the total, and forgetting them is a common way a flooring budget overruns.
