Baseboard, the trim that runs along the bottom of a wall where it meets the floor, is estimated from the room's perimeter, since it follows the walls all the way around. The perimeter of a rectangular room is twice the sum of its length and width. From that, subtract the width of every doorway, because baseboard stops at each door opening rather than crossing it. The result is the net length of baseboard the room actually needs. To that, add a waste allowance to cover the material lost when boards are mitred — cut at an angle — to meet neatly at corners, and to absorb the occasional cutting mistake. Dividing the total by the length of the boards sold, and rounding up, gives the number of pieces to buy. For rooms that are not simple rectangles, the perimeter is measured by adding up all the wall segments rather than using the length-times-width shortcut.

Starting from the perimeter
Baseboard estimating begins with a simple insight: the trim runs continuously around the base of every wall, so the length you need is essentially the room's perimeter. For a rectangular room, that perimeter is twice the length plus twice the width, a quick calculation. For rooms with bays, alcoves, or irregular shapes, the shortcut does not apply and you instead measure and add up each wall segment individually. Either way, the perimeter is the starting quantity from which everything else is subtracted or added.
From the raw perimeter, the main deduction is doorways. Baseboard does not run across a door opening — it stops on each side and resumes on the other — so the width of every doorway is subtracted from the perimeter. Wide openings, like a doorway to an adjoining room or a cased opening, remove a meaningful amount. Some people also deduct for very wide fireplaces or built-in cabinets that sit against the wall where no baseboard is fitted, though small gaps are usually left in as buffer. The net figure after these subtractions is the actual length of baseboard the room requires before any allowance for waste.
Corners, mitres, and waste
The waste allowance in baseboard installation exists mainly because of corners. Where two runs of baseboard meet at a corner, they are cut at an angle — mitred — so the profiles align cleanly, and each mitre cut wastes a small triangle of material. Inside corners (the usual concave corner of a room) and outside corners (a convex corner, as around a chimney breast or a jog in the wall) both consume a little length. A room with many corners wastes more than a plain rectangle, so the allowance should scale with the complexity of the layout.
Beyond corners, waste covers the ordinary hazards of the job: a mitre cut at the wrong angle, a board that splits, or a length that comes up just short and has to be replaced. Ten percent is a reasonable allowance for a straightforward room, more for one with intricate trim or many corners and openings. Since baseboard is relatively inexpensive and running short means a return trip — possibly for a batch that does not perfectly match the profile or finish — erring toward a slightly generous order is sensible. Offcuts are also useful for short runs between a door and a corner, so they are rarely truly wasted.
Board lengths, joints, and a tidy finish
How the required footage translates into boards to buy depends on the lengths available, and the choice affects the finished look as well as the count. Baseboard and trim are sold in standard lengths, commonly up to sixteen feet. Using longer boards means fewer joints along each wall, which matters because a joint in the middle of a run — a scarf joint where two pieces meet — is visible and, however well done, never quite as clean as an unbroken length. Where a wall is longer than the available board, the joint is best placed thoughtfully rather than wherever a board happens to end.
Good practice is to span each wall with a single board where possible, so the only joints are the mitred corners, which are meant to be there. When a wall exceeds the longest board, the scarf joint is cut at an angle and positioned away from sight lines and, ideally, over a stud for a solid fixing. Ordering with this in mind — favouring longer lengths for long walls even if it means a bit more waste — produces a noticeably neater result than buying the minimum footage in short pieces.
