A year is defined as the time a planet takes to complete one orbit of the Sun, and that time depends on the planet's distance — inner planets sweep around quickly, outer ones crawl. Your age in planetary years is therefore your age in Earth years divided by the length of that planet's year. On Mercury, which orbits four times a year in Earth terms, you are more than four times as old; on Neptune, you may not have completed a single orbit.

A 30-year-old has orbited the Sun 30 times. On Mercury, whose year is just 0.241 Earth years, that is 30 ÷ 0.241 ≈ 124.5 Mercurian years. On Neptune, whose year is 164.79 Earth years, the same person is only 0.18 Neptunian years old — not yet one Neptune birthday.

Why a year is different on every planet

A year is not an arbitrary unit — it is one trip around the Sun. Earth takes 365.25 days to make that trip, and we call it a year out of familiarity, but every planet has its own. Kepler's laws tie the length of a year to distance: the farther a planet orbits, the longer its path and the slower it travels, so its year stretches out dramatically.

Mercury, hugging the Sun, completes an orbit in just 88 Earth days, so it has more than four birthdays for each of ours. Neptune, thirty times farther out, needs almost 165 Earth years for a single orbit — it has completed only one orbit since its discovery in 1846.

Years and days are not the same thing

This calculator counts orbital years, not days, and the two can be wildly out of step. A year is one orbit of the Sun; a day is one spin on the axis. On Venus these come apart completely: a Venusian day (243 Earth days) is actually longer than a Venusian year (225 Earth days), so on Venus the Sun rises and sets fewer than twice per orbit.

Mercury is similarly strange — it spins exactly three times for every two orbits, so a single Mercurian solar day (noon to noon) lasts two Mercurian years. The ages here deliberately use orbits, the intuitive meaning of a birthday, rather than trying to reconcile these very different day lengths.

A fun way to feel the scale of the solar system

Turning your age into planetary years makes the vast differences in orbital distance tangible in a way that kilometres do not. That you would be over a hundred years old on Mercury and an infant on Neptune captures, viscerally, just how much more space the outer planets have to cover.

It is also a favourite classroom and museum exhibit for exactly that reason. NASA's own outreach materials use the same calculation, and the numbers are a memorable hook for the underlying physics: orbital period grows as the three-halves power of distance, the relationship Kepler discovered four centuries ago.

How old am I on Mars?

Divide your Earth age by 1.881, the length of a Martian year in Earth years. A 30-year-old is about 15.9 Martian years old. Because a Mars year is nearly twice an Earth year, you age about half as fast in Martian birthdays.

On which planet would I be oldest?

Mercury, always. It has the shortest year of any planet — 88 Earth days — so you accumulate planetary years fastest there. A 30-year-old is roughly 124 Mercurian years old.

Does this account for the different length of a day on each planet?

No — it counts orbital years, which is the intuitive meaning of a birthday: one trip around the Sun. Day length varies enormously and often disagrees with year length (a day on Venus is longer than its year), so mixing them in would make the ages far less meaningful.

Why isn't the Moon or the Sun in the list?

Because neither orbits the Sun in the way a planet does — the Moon orbits Earth, and the Sun sits at the centre. Without an orbital year of their own, there is no planetary age to compute, so the list is limited to the planets and Pluto.
