A light-year is a distance, not a time — it is how far light travels in one year, about 9.46 trillion kilometres. Because the speed of light is constant and finite, distance and travel time are interchangeable: divide a distance by the speed of light to learn how long light takes to cross it. This is why astronomers measure the cosmos in light travel time, and why looking far out into space is always looking back in time.

A light-year is a distance, not a duration

The single most common misunderstanding in astronomy is that a light-year measures time. It does not — it measures distance, specifically the distance light covers in one year of travel: 9.46 trillion kilometres. Astronomers use it because the kilometre is hopelessly small at cosmic scales, the way a millimetre would be for measuring the distance between cities.

The related unit, the parsec, is what professionals actually use. One parsec is about 3.26 light-years, defined by the geometry of how a nearby star's position shifts as Earth orbits the Sun. The Hubble and James Webb telescopes report distances in megaparsecs — millions of parsecs.

Every telescope is a time machine

Because light travels at a finite speed, we never see anything as it is now — only as it was when the light left it. The Sun you see is eight minutes and twenty seconds old. The nearest star is four years in the past. The Andromeda galaxy appears as it was 2.5 million years ago, before our species existed.

The James Webb Space Telescope pushes this to its limit, observing galaxies whose light has travelled for over 13 billion years — showing them as they were shortly after the Big Bang. Looking deep into space is inseparable from looking deep into the past, which is how we study the history of the universe at all.

Why nothing can outrun light

The speed of light is not merely the speed of light — it is the speed limit of the universe, the maximum rate at which any information or influence can travel. This is a consequence of Einstein's relativity, not a technological limitation, and it shapes everything about space travel and communication.

It is why a conversation with a Mars rover has a delay of several minutes each way, why a signal to a probe at the edge of the solar system takes many hours, and why interstellar travel is so daunting: even at light speed, the nearest star is a four-year journey, and nothing we can build comes remotely close to that speed.
